Patients have the right to refuse care. If they ask you not to use equipment:

  • Try to explain what you are doing and how it protects patients and staff, similar to gowns and gloves. Explain this as early as possible before you start.
  • Make sure you are confident with the safety and use of equipment, and if you are not, find someone who can help.
  • Ask why the patient does not want to use the equipment.
  • Offer safe alternatives that can make them more comfortable.
  • Consider trying again at a more opportune time.
  • Recruit other care team members, charge nurses, or supervisors to explain the need to do it safely and offer all safe alternatives.
  • If the patient refuses all safe methods, care may not be possible. Work with your care team and supervisors, and continue to communicate with the patient about safe methods of care. Document as necessary.
